During the application phase of the enrollment process individuals are required to confirm their eligibility. Individuals applying for the program must have at least five (5) years of training and development experience in the field1. One (1) year relevant college/university study (at least nine credit hours of work) may be substituted for one (1) year of relevant work experience.
Proof of experience is captured in the online application where individuals are asked to provide a list of employers who can validate that they have a minimum of five years of training and development experience. Individuals who meet eligibility requirements may move on to register for the program (part 2 of the enrollment process).
If an individual feels the denial of eligibility is unwarranted, he or she may appeal the decision.
Registering and Paying for the Program
During the registration phase of the enrollment process, individuals register and pay to participate in the program.
As part of the process, individuals are required to sign various important agreements, one of which is the ASTD CI Code of Ethics agreement. Any alleged violation of the Code of Ethics will be addressed pursuant to the Code of Ethics and Procedures for Review of Conduct. Click here for more information.
Phase 2: Knowledge Exam Testing
The CPLP certification process involves candidates taking and passing a knowledge exam that is designed to measure their breadth of knowledge in the training and development field. The exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions that focus on the 10 AOEs of the ASTD 2013 Competency Model. Candidates will have two hours and 30 minutes to complete the exam.
While the exam focuses on the breadth of knowledge, certain areas are weighted more heavily than others.
Please see below the table for weighting of Area of Expertise:
Area of Expertise | Exam Weighting (%) |
1. Instructional Design (ID) | 16 |
2. Training Delivery (TD) | 16 |
3. Performance Improvement (PI) | 16 |
4. Evaluating Learning Impact (ELI) | 12 |
5. Managing Learning Programs (MLP) | 10 |
6. Coaching (COA) | 7 |
7. Integrated Talent Management (ITM) | 9 |
8. Change Management (CM) | 8 |
9. Knowledge Management (KM) | 6 |
10. Learning Technologies (LT) | 02 |
Total Test | 100% |
Exam scores are reported to candidates immediately upon completing the exam. Candidates who pass the exam may move on to the next step of the process. Candidates who are unsuccessful are invited to retake the exam during the next testing window. A retest fee will apply.
Phase 3: Work Product Submission
After passing the knowledge exam, CPLP candidates are provided with an opportunity to demonstrate their competence in one particular AOE by submitting a work product. The project selected for the work product submission must meet the following requirements:
- Is a current project completed within the past five years (prior to the work product submission deadline).
- Reflects actual project work. It cannot be a hypothetical or fictitious project.
- Relates to one of the AOEs that are currently available for submission (see below).
- Includes evidence of a candidate’s own work versus the work of others.
- Because the CPLP program is based on North American practices, it must be in English.
Currently there are four AOEs available for submission:
- Instructional Design,
- Training Delivery,
- Performance Improvement, and
- Managing Learning Programs.
Each AOE has unique requirements and deliverables but the underlying structure is basically the same.
Candidates submit a work product package that includes the following items:
- Narratives: essay-style responses designed to capture information about the project and the candidate’s performance.
- Evidence: samples of actual work provided by the candidate to substantiate the explanations made in their narrative responses.
- Administrative forms: contact, release, and permission forms designed to protect all parties legally.
Packages are mailed to an appointed destination and must be received by the deadline.
Once received, packages are processed and prepared for scoring. Scoring takes place two to three weeks after the submission window closes. Rating teams score work products at scoring sessions held twice per year (one session for March and May testers and a second session for September and November testers). Each scoring session takes four days to complete. Rating teams are made up of CPLP credential holders with subject matter expertise in each of the AOEs being evaluated. Each rater is required to sign a nondisclosure document prior to participating.
Approximately six to eight weeks after the work product submission deadline, candidates will be notified of their scores and results (pass, fail or disqualification) by email.
In accordance with accepted certification program standards, the score report is limited to general feedback. Specific or personalized feedback is strictly prohibited because it raises issues around fairness and program integrity.
The following table contains information about the type of project that one needs to submit for each AOE along with the required deliverables and “must-have” evidence:
